How to Properly Dispose of Old Asphalt Shingles

A roof repair or replacement is a labor-intensive process that needs to be carefully planned, from choosing the right roofer to disposing of old shingles. In this article, we share a simple guide on how to properly dispose of your asphalt shingles so that your property remains clean and tidy.

  • Rent a bin or dumpster. The easiest way to get rid of your roofing waste is with a disposal bin or a roll-off dumpster. You can rent a container for the entire duration of your roof repair or replacement and clean up the debris at your own pace. Once you are done, you can simply schedule a time and date for the pickup and have the bin hauled away.
  • Dump the asphalt shingles. If you prefer to dispose of your old asphalt shingles from your roofing project on your own, you will need to deliver the container filled with refuse materials to a local landfill. To do this, you need to have access to a pickup truck. It will likely take several trips to the landfill to dispose of everything. While this adds to the effort and time needed to complete your roof replacement or repair project, it is one of the most low-cost disposal options you can get. If you are working with a roofing contractor, this step may not be necessary.
  • Hire a removal company. You can simply hire a junk removal company to take care of the disposal of your asphalt shingles. Keep in mind that this option may not be available in all areas and that you will not likely receive a quote for the service until the company arrives on site.
